The exact number of countries in the world cannot be determined precisely because of the presence of colonized countries by other countries and disputed territories such as Taiwan, which declared independence despite the People’s Republic of China’s control of it, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, the Paracel Islands, the Western Sahara, and the Spratly Islands And Antarctica, and it has been decided to determine the number of countries in the world based on the 193 member states of the United Nations, in addition to the Vatican and Palestine, which are observers and are not members of the organization, and thus the number of countries in the world becomes 195 countries.

South Sudan is the newest country in the world, as it became independent from Sudan on July 9, 2011, and 29 new countries have been created since 1990 until now; most of them appeared due to the collapse of the Soviet Union that resulted in 14 new countries, and the collapse of the former Yugoslavia that resulted Seven new countries, just as Kosovo gained independence from Serbia in 2008, and Montenegro gained independence from Serbia in 2006.
