Burj Khalifa

We are still – in the Arab world – we are classified as one of the economically underdeveloped third world countries with a low standard of living, if we are compared to western countries, and this can be true for most Arab countries, but when there is a country like the United Arab Emirates, and Be prepared to spend a billion and a half billion dollars to create the highest skyscraper in the world, which must be removed from the list of economic underdevelopment and included in other lists.

Burj Khalifa is the tallest building on the face of the globe with a height of 828 m, which is considered one of the most important achievements in the history of architecture, so how was this giant created?

The construction of the tower lasted for nearly 6 years (from February 2004 to January 2010), as a building with an area of 4 million square meters was produced.
And 180 floors comprising 900 apartments, 160 hotel rooms in addition to 37 floors of offices, and Burj Khalifa was a product of the ideas of the Emaar Real Estate Company – one of the most important and largest real estate companies in the world -, which was aimed at highlighting the role of Dubai as the most important center Financial and business growing in the world.

Build the tower

To accomplish this giant building, Emaar used the American engineering company Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP: SOM, where the latest engineering methods and techniques were used to complete the construction of this skyscraper as quickly as possible, and they found that the fastest way to build is by using a climbing formation; and Which is done by using ready-made molds with a height of 4 meters, where the reinforced concrete is poured – using the largest cement pumps in the world – into it to form the supports, which led to the completion of a full floor every week, and it is worth noting that the cement that was used consists of 25 materials It was specially made to this end, as it remains Fluid, as it is transported to the top of the tower and hardens as standard upon pouring.

New building methods to complete the tower

The engineer overseeing the construction process (Bill Baker) explained that for the first time a system of the “reinforced core” was used, which is considered a precedent of its kind in the world of architecture. The building, and this core was supported by three additional wings. As for the foundations of the tower, it depends on the strong bond between the ground and the sides of the columns, where 192 columns were used under the tower and at a depth of 50 meters under the ground.

The tests that were taken for the tower and the construction process

One of the things that attracted the attention of engineers during the tower design and implementation process – as it is a very long construction – is the extent of the impact of wind on it, so they used the help of wind engineers who tested the building, and they made 3 dynamic improvements to it, namely:

  • Improving external stents.
  • Reducing the width of the tower at the higher levels.
  • Reorient the tower relative to the prevailing wind directions in the area.

In the end, the tower was wrapped with 24,000 reflective glass panels, 6 meters long and at a cost of 2000 dollars per plate, so congratulate you on these giant achievements.
