Sebastia

Sebastia is considered to be one of the Palestinian villages located in the northwest of Nablus, on a hill covered with almonds and olive trees. It embraces a long history between its alleys and flanks, and many civilizations and empires consecuted for 3000 years, and the village still preserves its historical heritage until now over an area estimated With 60 dunums, it is characterized by a beautiful climate and rises about 463 meters above sea level, and is inhabited by nearly 4000 people.

Archeological history of the village

The ruins of the village date back to the ancient stone and bronze ages, and this name was named after the name of Sebasti, which was founded by Herod the Great during the year 25 BC on the ruins of the ancient village of Samaria. The most important sites of the ancient village of Sebastia

  • The Hellenic Defense Tower: It is a watchtower and is considered to be the first line of defense for the village of Sebastia, whose construction dates back to the fourth century BC, and there are still the remains of its columns among the olive trees.

Sebastia in the Islamic era and at the present time

In the Islamic era, the village was opened by the companion Omar bin Al-Aas during the year 634 AD, and after that the Crusaders took control of it and then returned to the Muslims at the hands of Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi during the year 1187 AD, and he built a mosque in it at the shrine of our master Yahya, peace be upon him, next to the Cathedral, and in 1910 AD The village witnessed archaeological excavations by the Israelis, but their efforts did not succeed, and at the present time it is controlled by the Zionist occuAl Bahahn and prevents Muslims from excavating its antiquities.
