Durbar Square

Durbar Square is one of the most prominent landmarks in the capital. It is the heart of the ancient capital, where the royal family lived until the nineteenth century. It was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. In addition to the Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, there are many temples dating back to the 12th century. Unfortunately, a massive earthquake destroyed most of the southern temples and severely damaged other buildings, including the palace, in 2015. However, there are also two more sophisticated and historically important squares in Durbar Square near the Kathmandu Valley, in Patan and Bhaktapur.

Shop and discover Tamil Beauty

The Tamil tourist district of Kathmandu is sometimes crowded, but it maintains the old world feel that is distinguished by rows of flags and carts.

The streets of this lively neighborhood are lined with colorful boutiques, jewelry, paper lanterns, Buddhist Thangka paintings, wood carvings, bronze statues, music and books.

As the evening arrives, Tamil takes on a completely different character as its streets glow with lights and the sound of music from restaurants.

Explore the back streets of Kathmandu

If you want to get to know in depth the old capital, the Love Kathmandu campaign offers tourists a thrilling three and a half hour special tour, which includes a variety of cultural experiences. Specifically include tasting tea, inhaling on a spice dish, discovering hidden temples, learning about local myths, and getting to where the ancient Tibetan caravan route began.

Love Kathmandu campaign was established in 2014 to enable visitors to see the usual sights and delve into Nepal’s culture. Profits are donated to popular charitable projects that help support the community.

Try the local cuisine

On the corner of Durbar Square, Roots Eatery was opened in 2016 as an extension of an institution created by its owners after the earthquake. It aims to enhance Newari’s heritage in the region, and serves delicious Naiyari cuisine.

Aside from the food, the ambiance is really beautiful with the friendly staff, sumptuous interiors made with recycled materials, and an outdoor seating area. It offers large quantities of food at reasonable prices.

Enroll in a classroom or workshop

Have you enjoyed Nepalese food and want to know how to prepare it? Or maybe you fond of Thangka complex paintings and want to make them?

Anyone interested in cooking Nepalese food is advised to register for Cook Like A Local, provided by Socialtours. Go with the professionals to the market to get fresh ingredients and learn about spices, before you learn how to make delicious Nepalese dishes.

The Nepal Cooking School also provides needed cooking lessons, and the profits are used to fund social programs that empower women and girls in remote villages.

On the other hand, Backstreet Academy offers a wide range of experimental tours, all conducted by a local expert. Thangka Painting Workshop is the most popular one, and you will get a unique keepsake to go home!
