Waiheke Island is the second largest island in the Gulf after the Great Barrier Island. It is the most populated island, with approximately 8,730 permanent residents plus an estimated 3,400 who have a second home or vacation on the island. It is one of the most densely populated islands in New Zealand, with 83.58 inhabitants / sq km, and the third the size of its population after the North and South Islands. It is an island that can be reached in the bay, with regular passenger and ferry services by car, a Wahiki-based helicopter operator, and other air links.

The island off the north coast of the island. It stretches for about 19.3 km (12.0 mi) long from west to east, and varies in width 0.64-9.65 km (0.40-6, 00 mi), and has an area of 92 km2 (36 sq mi). The coast extends to 133.5 km (83.0 mi), including 40 km (25 mi) from beaches. The port of Matiatia at the western end is 17.7 km (11.0 mi) from Auckland and the eastern end is 21.4 km (13.3 mi) from Coromandel. The island is much smaller than Tarahiki which is located 3 km (1.9 mi) to the east.
The island is located on the hillside with a few flat areas, which reach the highest point of Kiriti at 231 meters (758 feet). It has a warmer climate than Auckland, less humid, rain and sunshine for more than an hour.
Beaches
Aheki has many beautiful beaches, and is a favorite for swimming in Oneroa (the island’s main city, near the ferry terminal) and in Onetangi, which is a 20-minute bus ride away. Buses meet all ferries – follow the signs at the bus station.
The Aheke Coast, boasts many beautiful walks with stunning views of the surrounding islands and Coromandel. You can also discover the sandy beaches, original Bush and historical sites along many scenic paths. There are two walkways from the ferry terminal – just follow the coast from left or right when you leave the platform and yellow and green signs can be tracked.
