The region where the city of Maputo is located today was discovered in 1544 AD, by a Portuguese merchant named Lawrence Marques, who is attributed to the ancient name of the city. In the late eighteenth century AD, the founding of the city began, and it grew, and it flourished with the establishment of the railway line connecting to the city of Pretoria in the state of South Africa in 1895 AD, then it became the country’s capital in 1907 AD, and its name changed to the current name (Maputo) after the independence .
