  • The Romen rule of the city contributed to its prosperity, but the main reason for its emergence was the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD.
  • The city was subject to the rule of the Aghlabids during the period between 800-909 AD, which was followed by its arrival to the greatest period of prosperity under the ruling dynasty between the years 1236-1574 CE.
  • The capital underwent some changes related to government for a period of time, when it was seized by the Romen Emperor Charles V in the year 1535 AD and remained under his rule until the year that was controlled by the Turks in 1539 AD.
  • She was held by the Spaniards between 1573-1574 AD, but soon returned her to the Ottoman Empire to remain under her rule until she became a French protectorate in the period 1881-1956 AD.
  • The city was occupied in 1942 by the Germans, when the Allies and Britain liberated it in 1943 AD, and it was designated as the official capital of Tunisia in 1956 AD after achieving independence.

Tourism in Tunisia

Tunis includes many landmarks that can be visited as tourist destinations. It has two cultural centers, and a theater that is used by international theater companies, and there are features that follow the rule of the Antonine emperors who ruled Rome in the second century AD and are thermal baths, along with the presence of Zaytuna Mosque, which is the oldest and most famous memorial there.
The ancient city of Tunisia was distinguished by a great tourist importance, as the modern architecture resulting from the French buildings on Habib Bourguiba Street mixed with the ancient ruins of the city, which exceeded 700 antiquities, and most of these pieces date back to the period of Tunisia’s prosperity in the fields of learning and wealth in the Islamic era between the two centuries AD -16, which are located in the form of mosques, markets, schools, and military palaces, in addition to fountains and city gates.
