king Fahd’s bridge

The King Fahd Causeway is the connecting link between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, as it stretches from Al Khobar in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Gulf of Bahrain to reach Bahrain over a distance of 25 km and a width equal to 23.2 m, and the idea of establishing the bridge was first raised in 1965 By Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Bahraini Prime Minister, when he visited King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia at the time, with the aim of achieving commercial, economic, and social benefits for both countries.

Built it

King Fahd bin Abdulaziz established a joint committee that included experts from both brotherly countries to study the possibility of building a bridge linking the two countries. In 1981, during the reign of King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, work began officially on building the bridge through the Dutch company Plast Needham The bridge was officially opened in 1986.

Information on the bridge

I recorded huge global figures and statistics while working on building the bridge, including:

  • About 345,000 cubic meters of concrete, 25,000 tons of reinforced concrete, and 10,000 tons of stressed steel were used to construct the basic foundations and pillars of the King Fahd Bridge.
  • The total amount of soil raised during construction ranges between 9.5 million square meters.
  • The number of Bahraini workers who worked on building the bridge reached about 1,500 Bahraini workers.
  • The total average cost of building the bridge was 564 million Saudi riyals, as construction costing one kilometer of dams of the bridge cost about 68 million Saudi riyals.
  • Since the opening of the bridge and until 2000 AD, approximately 25 million vehicles have crossed King Fahd Bridge at a rate of 4,989 vehicles per day. The number of travelers across the bridge has reached more than 6 million, at a rate of 22,971 passengers daily.

The middle island of the bridge

In the middle of the King Fahd Bridge, a small island with a tourist character is located in it, because it includes recreational areas and restaurants to serve travelers through it. And if the weather is clear and free from low clouds, the one sitting in this restaurant can see the buildings of the city of Khobar, the Corniche, which can also see on the opposite side the features of Bahrain Island.
