Syrian Arab Republic

The Syrian governorate of Deir Al-Zour embraces archaeological monuments among its branches. Among the most prominent of these are:

  • The city of Basra: It is a city or an archaeological hill about forty kilometers from the center of Deir Ezzor Governorate. It is mentioned that its origins date back to Romen and Greek times, and it is thus the largest archaeological hill in the region.
  • The validity of the Euphrates: It is one of the effects of the Dura-Auris civilization located between the towns of Al-Mayadeen and Albukamal, and derives its name from the Euphrates River located on its banks.
  • The Romen House: It is also called the Field Museum and it includes antiquities dating back to the Greek, Romen, French, European, and Palmyra eras, and it was discovered by archeological missions sent by Syria, France, and Europe. It is mentioned that this museum consists of five rooms with a large square. This discovered museum is a model of three or more civilizations in one building.
  • A huge museum: It is located in the eastern region of Syria and contains its rooms and more than twenty five thousand artifacts, such as statues, amulets, sculptures and others.
  • Suspension Bridge and Jurdak Restaurant, a river restaurant.

Activities in Deir Ezzor

The people of Deir Ezzor Governorate depend primarily on the profession of agriculture to raise the economy of the province, where they work to grow industrial agricultural crops such as cotton, sesame, and wheat, in addition to vegetables.

The adoption mine, located forty kilometers north of the governorate, works to extract rock salt, mining, and saline veins, and salt is extracted from the marsh on the Iraqi and Syrian border regions.

The people also take the textile, processing industries, and oil and gas extraction as an important source of livelihood, and there are stations in the province that explore for and collect oil. In terms of transportation, the governorate is extremely important due to the presence of the Deir Ezzor regional airport, which organizes internal and external trips, in addition to containing a train station that transports passengers and goods between the governorates of Syria.

There are many educational institutions in Deir Ezzor Governorate, such as Al-Jazirah Private University, and the Euphrates University, as well as a group of technical and vocational institutes.
