The idea of ​​creating a memorial to the independence of the United States of America was proposed in 1865 AD by the French Edouard de Laboulaye, and ten years later the sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design the statue so that it would be finished in 1876 AD, and the statue was named “Freedom illuminates the world,” and the project was an idea of ​​cooperation between America and France, as it was agreed that the American people would establish the base, and the French people would be responsible for building the statue itself.

Due to a lack of funding for the idea in the two countries, France raised money through public fees and lotteries, while the United States took advantage of plays, art galleries, auctions and matches to provide the necessary funds, as the poet Emma Lazarus wrote her famous book “The New Colossus ”in 1883 AD for an artistic and literary auction to raise funds for the construction of the pedestal, while at the same time in France, Bartholdi sought the assistance of an engineer to consult on the structural issues of the statue, and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was commissioned to design the large iron tower and the structural structure Tha Wei, which allows the copper layer to move alone while the statue remains standing.
