With 23 active volcanoes, six national parks, more than 200 miles of beaches, hundreds of waterfalls, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, tiny El Salvador – located in Central America – is packed with many natural attractions. Better yet, the tourist attractions of this country are mostly empty of large crowds, making you feel like you are the first to discover El Salvador.

Volcanoes National Park
Like Volcanoes National Park, there are not many places in the world where you can climb three high-rise volcanoes, two of which are still active. The most important attractions in the park mentioned are Santa Ana, the highest volcano in El Salvador, and the fourth highest volcano in Central America. Get started early to avoid crowds at this famous hike, for a four to five hour journey with stunning scenery.
The other two volcanoes are Izalco and Cerro Verde, which are also cool and should not be missed.
Montecristo National Park
Many adventure seekers come to Montecristo National Park to climb its 7800-foot mountain, El Trifinio, because its summit defines the borders of El Salvador with Guatemala and Honduras. But this cloudy cloudy forest also harbors rare wildlife, such as mountain lions, little anteater, and spider monkeys. Also in this wonderful garden there are 275 endemic species of birds, and other mountains such as Miramundo and El Brujo, which provide an excellent hiking experience.
Lake Coatepeque
With a name translated as a hill filled with snakes, Coatepeque Lake may look forbidden, but it’s quite the opposite – it’s a very popular quiet sanctuary. The lake is located near the volcanoes of Santa Ana and Izalco, and is made up of eruptions that occurred approximately 60,000 years ago.
Since much of its coastline is occupied by luxury homes of El Salvador, Coatepeque is remarkably quiet. Unless you are staying on the lake, the boat trip will give you the best access.
Lake Ilopango
Lake Ilobango, the second largest lake in El Salvador, has formed into the crater of an extinct volcano and is popular with divers who face challenges to explore their depths. Ilobango has many beautiful beaches, and in one of the geothermal activities it creates hot springs along the shores of the lake. Many people combine a trip to Lake Ilupango with a visit to the nearby colonial village of Suchitoto.
Los Cobanos Beach
Los Copanos Beach has golden gray sand. It is located in a fishing village initially discovered by divers who came to explore shipwrecks, and it offers long secluded stretches of hiking and coral reef bays for diving.
