The University of Al-Karaouine is considered the oldest Arab university in the world according to the report of UNESCO, and it is also the first university to establish specialized scientific chairs and grant degrees at the world level. The university is located in the city of Fez in the Arab Maghreb, the university was founded in 859 AD.

The university was built by Fatima bint Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Fihri al-Qayrawani al-Fassi which is known as the Mother of Boys, it is considered one of the most important historical monuments in the city of Fez, which is the spiritual and scientific capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, as the university was in the past a small mosque, then it was expanded and transformed To a huge building that includes many facilities, where the area of the university in the past was about 250 square meters, and its shape was almost square, as it reached nearly 39 meters in length and about 250 meters in width, then it was expanded in the Umayyad period and its area increased to approximately 2748 meters, In the Almohads and Sa’idians era, the mosque was expanded Once again, adding the facilities attached to it and establishing the famous fountain that mediates the university, the university now includes seventeen doors; the most famous of which is the Al-Shammain Gate, which is considered the main door to it, and the university is distinguished by its green domes, and its mihrab made of antique wood, and the circular fountain that mediates the university. And the huge library, and the area of the university at the present time is about 5845 square meters, and the university also includes a group of scientific chairs with a specialization, which made the university a multiplicity of studies.

The university did not have a monopoly on science over a specific group and a specific region, as it included students from all over the Arab and western world, and among the most important figures who studied at the university: Ibn Khaldoun, Ibn Al-Khatib, Ibn Harazam, Ibn Bajah, who was known to be a master in several sciences, including the Arabic language Medicine, the philosopher Ibn Maymun, and Hassan Ibn Al-Wazzan, known as a billion African, are among the most important personalities that have studied and graduated from the university: the student Gerbert Uriak, who came from Europe, the Maliki jurist Abu Imran Al-Fassi, Ibn Al-Bana Al-Marrakchi, and Ibn Al-Arabi.
