Arab baths Banys Àrabs

In the Arab baths

The Romenesque bathrooms, dating back to the 12th century and designed from a mixture of Romen and Arabic baths, have four rooms: a dressing room with a small swimming pool in the middle, a sauna, hot rooms and cold rooms. Hammamet has become a topic of great interest to 18th-century travelers, who discovered it with drawings of it. Finally, the Girona County Council bought the bathrooms in 1929 and they were restored, then re-opened to the public in 1932.

City walls

The ancient fortifications of Girona are a great place for hiking to see great views of the city and its surroundings. Medieval walls played a vital role in defending Girona from the invaders. After standing up to many attacks, the French eventually demolished the western part of the walls to expand the city. Visitors can access the walls from different points, but the most popular way is opposite the Arab baths.

Independence square, Plaça de la Independència

The main hub of Girona is Independence Square, located a few steps west of the Onyar River. The square, named after the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleon Bonaparte, is a great place to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere.

It is one of the busiest places in Girona with its many cafes and restaurants, and has an impressive style dating back to the 19th century. The monument in the center of the square is dedicated to city defenders during the siege from 1808 to 1809.
